The aim of this CPD course is to equip learners with a comprehensive understanding of the integumentary system and its appendages, including the structure and function of the skin, hair and nails. Learners will explore the roles these components play in body protection and  temperature regulation 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Describe the anatomical structure and key components of the integumentary system, including the layers of the skin, hair, nails, and associated glands.
  2. Explain the physiological functions of the integumentary system, including its roles in protecting the body from environmental harm, regulating body temperature, and maintaining homeostasis.
  3. Recognise common disorders and pathological conditions affecting the integumentary system, appreciating their clinical relevance and impact on patient care. 
  4. Apply foundational knowledge of the integumentary system to inform clinical decision-making to improve patient treatment outcomes.

    • Definition and functions (protection, temperature regulation, sensation. 
    • Skin physiology 
    • Skin anatomy -epidermis, dermis, hypodermis. 
    • Structure and function of the skin layers 
    • Skin cells and their functions (keratinocytes, melanocytes. 
    • Skin assessment tools 
    • Structure and functions of  hair and nails, 
    • Intrinsic and factors impacting on skin health  
    • Aging and the integumentary system  
    • Self -Directed Learning – EBP and research  
    • End of Course Exam  
    • Reflective Practice 

Method of learning: The course is delivered entirely online, making it accessible to participants worldwide. Learning materials include a narrated presentation, a training manual, an e-library featuring evidence-based publications, administration videos and a multiple-choice quiz to test your acquisition of skills at the end of the unit.
